What You Need to Know About Disney Character Dining
When do Disney dining reservations open?
Disney opens dining reservations 60 days ahead at about 6 AM Eastern. Disney Resort hotel guests can book their whole stay, up to 10 nights, at 60 days before arrival.
How much does Disney character dining cost?
Most character breakfasts sit in Disney’s $$$ tier ($35 to $59.99 per adult), and most lunches and dinners are $$$$, over $60. Child prices apply to ages 3 to 9.
What happens if you cancel late?
Disney charges $10 per person if you cancel within 2 hours or don’t show up. Prepaid meals like Cinderella’s Royal Table keep the full price.
Which Disney Character Meal Is Best for Your Kids’ Ages?

Toddlers do best at The Crystal Palace or Chef Mickey’s. Both are buffets, so little ones eat right away, and the characters are gentle favorites like Pooh and Mickey.
On the other hand, princess fans ages 4 to 8 light up at Akershus Royal Banquet Hall in EPCOT or 1900 Park Fare at the Grand Floridian. Disney lists Aladdin, Cinderella, Mirabel and Tiana at 1900 Park Fare. Akershus features a rotating group of Disney princesses.
Meanwhile, older kids and tweens tend to prefer Story Book Dining at Artist Point in the Wilderness Lodge. Snow White, Dopey and Grumpy visit, and the Queen makes a dramatic visit that older kids love.
Finally, for grandparents who care most about the food, I like Topolino’s Terrace breakfast at the Riviera Resort. Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Daisy visit in artist outfits, and the plated breakfast is a cut above a buffet.
Is Disney Character Dining Worth the Price?

Yes, character dining is worth the price for most families with kids under 10. You get a full meal plus several character visits at your table, without standing in line.
For example, breakfast is the best value. Most character breakfasts sit in Disney’s $$$ tier, while lunch and dinner at the same restaurant usually jump to $$$$, over $60 per adult. The Crystal Palace, Garden Grill and Tusker House all charge more at dinner than at breakfast.
That said, character dining is harder to justify for teens or adults-only trips. If your kids have outgrown hugs from Pluto, a regular table-service meal will usually give you better food for less.
Should You Book a Character Meal or Meet Characters in the Parks?

Book at least one character meal if your kids love characters, then use park meet-and-greets for the rest. Meet-and-greets in the parks come with your park ticket, but you usually wait in line for each one.
You should also consider that each park has favorites. In Magic Kingdom you can meet Mickey at Town Square Theater or princesses at Princess Fairytale Hall. In EPCOT, Anna and Elsa greet guests at Royal Sommerhus in Norway, and Hollywood Studios has Olaf and Darth Vader near Echo Lake.
In short, a character meal trades money for time. A single breakfast can cover the characters your kids care about most, which frees your park hours for rides.

Help Me Pick a Character MealWhat Are the Best Disney World Restaurants Without Characters?

The best regular restaurants at Disney World are the ones kids remember for the setting. Space 220 in EPCOT seats you in a space station with Earth outside the window, with a 2-course lunch or a 3-course dinner, and Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater in Hollywood Studios seats you in a classic car to watch old movie clips.
Closer to the castle, Skipper Canteen in Magic Kingdom serves bold flavors with jokes from the Jungle Cruise skippers. Be Our Guest is a three-course prix fixe meal inside the Beast’s castle, and it costs more.
Similarly, EPCOT’s Via Napoli is an easy win with wood-fired pizza for the whole table. In Animal Kingdom, Tiffins is the grown-up pick, and in Galaxy’s Edge, Oga’s Cantina welcomes all ages for a visit of up to 45 minutes.
Which Disney Character Meal Is Our Family’s Favorite?

Our family’s favorite character meal is breakfast at The Crystal Palace on Main Street, U.S.A. in Magic Kingdom. Winnie the Pooh and his friends visit every table, and it’s where we once celebrated Grammy’s birthday.
For that morning, the bakery at Disney’s Contemporary Resort made her a Snow White cake, with Snow White herself shaped from white chocolate and painted by hand. Grammy’s whole family filled our table, every one of the grandkids squeezed in close. When the cake arrived, Pooh, Eeyore and their friends gathered around to wish her a happy birthday.
I watched Grammy’s face as the grandkids sang along with Pooh and Eeyore, and I’ll never forget it. We’ve had a lot of great meals at Disney, but none felt more like home than that birthday breakfast on Main Street.
When Do Disney Dining Reservations Open?

Disney dining reservations open 60 days before your meal date at about 6 AM Eastern, according to Disney’s dining reservation page. Disney Resort hotel guests get a head start, because they can book meals for their whole stay, up to 10 nights, at 60 days before check-in.
In fact, that head start matters most for Cinderella’s Royal Table, Story Book Dining and ‘Ohana breakfast, which can fill quickly. Use our Disney dining reservation calculator to find the exact morning your window opens.
Also, Disney needs a reservation for everyone in your party, babies included. A late cancellation, within 2 hours, costs $10 per person.
Does the Disney Dining Plan Cover Character Meals?

The Disney Dining Plan does cover character meals, and you book them the same way at 60 days. Most character meals count as one table-service meal, while prix fixe meals like Cinderella’s Royal Table count as two, so a single princess meal can use up two days of table-service credits.
The standard plan includes one table-service meal, one quick-service meal and one snack per night, plus a refillable resort mug for your stay. Our guide on how to make the most of the Disney Dining Plan walks through when it pays off.
For 2027 trips, Disney also offers a Deluxe plan with two table-service meals per night. That suits families who want a character breakfast and a sit-down dinner on the same day.
As a rule of thumb, the plan works best for families who want a sit-down meal every day. If you only plan one or two character meals, paying as you go is usually simpler.
Frequently Asked Questions About Disney Character Dining
What Is the Best Character Dining at Disney World?
The best character dining at Disney World for most families is Tusker House in Animal Kingdom, a buffet served at breakfast, lunch and dinner where Mickey, Donald and friends visit in safari outfits. Story Book Dining at Artist Point is a top pick for older kids, and Akershus is the favorite for princess fans.
If I could only book one, I’d pick Tusker House for breakfast. The food has real variety, the characters come right to your table, and you’re steps from Kilimanjaro Safaris when you finish.
What Is the Cheapest Character Meal at Disney World?
Breakfast is the least expensive character meal at Disney World, and most character breakfasts fall in Disney’s $$$ tier of $35 to $59.99 per adult. Garden Grill, Hollywood and Vine, Tusker House and Cape May Cafe breakfasts are among the lowest priced.
Even so, I’d choose the breakfast in the park you’re already visiting that day. Saving a few dollars isn’t worth a long bus ride at 7 in the morning with sleepy kids. Breakfast also leaves you a full park day ahead.
Can You Meet Disney Characters Without Character Dining?
Yes, you can meet Disney characters in every park without booking a character meal. Meet-and-greets like Mickey at Town Square Theater and Olaf at Hollywood Studios come with park admission, though you usually wait in line.
For that reason, many families book one character breakfast and fill in the rest with park meet-and-greets. That way the kids see their favorites without spending the whole day in lines. Start with the characters your kids talk about most, and treat anyone else as a bonus.
How Far in Advance Should You Book Disney Character Dining?
Book Disney character dining 60 days before your meal date, when Disney opens reservations at about 6 AM Eastern. Disney Resort hotel guests can book their whole stay, up to 10 nights, at 60 days before check-in.
For Cinderella’s Royal Table or ‘Ohana breakfast, be ready the moment your window opens. Popular breakfast times go quickly on busy weeks. If your first choice is gone, keep checking, because plans change and tables open back up as families cancel.
How Can a Travel Advisor Help You Book Disney Dining?
A Favorite Grampy Travels advisor can be ready the morning your 60-day window opens to book your dining. We match each character meal to your park days, your kids’ ages and the characters they love most, then build the rest of your meals around them.
It pairs well with the right hotel, since resort guests book their whole stay at once. Our guide to the best Disney World resort for families helps with that part, and it’s part of our Disney vacation planning service.
