How Do You Plan Your First Disney World Trip?
Plan your first Disney World trip in five steps, in this order. Pick your dates, decide how many days, and book your hotel and tickets. Then book dining at 60 days and Lightning Lane 7 or 3 days out.
Most first-time families need 4 or 5 park days to see all four parks without rushing.
Hotels and packages for most of 2027 are already on sale. Travel dates through October 31, 2027 went on sale in mid-April 2026, and a package holds with a $200 deposit, according to Disney’s 2027 package terms. This guide is for parents and grandparents planning a first visit in 2026 or 2027.
| When | What to Book or Do | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| As soon as your dates open | Hotel room or vacation package | Popular hotels and holiday weeks fill first; a package holds with $200 |
| 60 days before check-in | Dining reservations, 6:00 AM Eastern | Character meals and favorite restaurants book up fast |
| 30 days before arrival | Package paid in full | Disney requires full payment 30 days out on packages |
| 7 days (hotel guests) or 3 days (others) | Lightning Lane, 7:00 AM Eastern | Hotel guests get a 4-day head start on the busiest rides |
| Every morning of your stay | Early Theme Park Entry | Disney hotel guests enter every park 30 minutes early |

What You Need to Know About Planning Disney World
Do you still need park reservations at Disney World?
Not with date-based tickets. Disney dropped park reservations for date-based tickets on January 9, 2024, though Annual Passes and some other tickets still need them.
How far ahead can you book a 2027 Disney World trip?
Travel dates through October 31, 2027 have been on sale since mid-April 2026. November and December 2027 dates have not been announced yet.
What do Disney hotel guests get?
Disney Resort hotel guests enter every park 30 minutes early every day, book dining for their whole stay at 60 days, and book Lightning Lane 7 days before check-in.
- Hotels, tickets and packages on sale for travel through October 31, 2027
- Packages hold with a $200 deposit and are paid in full 30 days before arrival
- Early Theme Park Entry for Disney Resort hotel guests, 30 minutes, every park, every day
- November and December 2027 hotel and ticket dates, estimated to open in fall 2026
- 2027 holiday party dates and prices
- Any 2027 room discounts, which are occasionally available and released by Disney
What Order Should You Book Everything In?
Book in this order: dates, hotel and tickets, dining, then Lightning Lane. Dates come first, because Disney prices tickets and hotels by date and some weeks cost far more than others. Then book your hotel and tickets together, since the hotel you pick decides your dining and Lightning Lane windows.
Next, your dining window opens 60 days before check-in at 6:00 AM Eastern. Our Disney dining reservation calculator finds your exact booking morning. Lightning Lane comes last, 7 days out for hotel guests and 3 days out for everyone else.
How Many Days Do You Need at Disney World?

Most first-time families need 4 park days, one for each of the four theme parks, plus 1 or 2 extra days for rest. A 5 or 6 night stay fits that nicely. With little ones or grandparents, add a pool or resort day in the middle of the trip.
Of course, Walt Disney World has four theme parks: Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom. Each one fills a full day on a first visit. Disney’s own planning panel suggests at least four days for a first trip, with a fifth to revisit favorites.
Here is how I’d size a first trip for different families.
| Your Family | Park Days | Total Trip | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toddlers and preschoolers | 4 | 6 nights | Two slower days with naps and pool time keep everyone happy |
| Grade-school kids, 5 to 10 | 4 or 5 | 5 or 6 nights | A fifth day lets you repeat Magic Kingdom, their favorite |
| Tweens and teens | 5 | 5 or 6 nights | Extra time for thrill rides and a second Hollywood Studios day |
| Three generations together | 4 | 6 nights | A rest day halfway through saves the grandparents’ legs |
| Short trip on a budget | 2 or 3 | 3 or 4 nights | Magic Kingdom plus one or two parks your kids care about most |

Which Disney World Parks Should You Visit First?
See Magic Kingdom first if you only pick one park. It has Cinderella Castle, classic rides like Peter Pan’s Flight and Space Mountain, and the fireworks most families picture. With 4 park days, give each park one full day and put Magic Kingdom on day 2, after your arrival day.
EPCOT has Frozen Ever After, Test Track and a walk around the world. Hollywood Studios is the Star Wars and Toy Story park. Meanwhile, Animal Kingdom has Kilimanjaro Safaris, Avatar Flight of Passage and animals around every corner.
Beyond that, spread your two busiest parks, usually Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios, across different days. Those are also the two parks where Lightning Lane earns its price most often.
When Should You Book Your Disney World Hotel and Tickets?
Book your hotel and tickets as soon as you know your dates. Disney opens the next year’s dates well ahead, and 2027 dates through October 31 went on sale April 16, 2026. The earlier you book, the more rooms and room types you can choose from.
A Disney vacation package holds with a $200 deposit and is due in full 30 days before arrival. On top of that, you can cancel a package more than 30 days out for a full refund, less any third-party fees. That flexibility is why I like booking early and adjusting later.
Better still, staying at a Disney hotel matters more on a first trip than most families expect. You get 30 minutes of Early Theme Park Entry every day, a longer dining window and a 4-day Lightning Lane head start. Our guide to the Walt Disney World resort hotel tiers explains the price levels.
When Do Disney World Dining Reservations Open?

Disney World dining reservations open 60 days before your date at 6:00 AM Eastern. Disney hotel guests can book their whole stay at the 60-day mark, up to 10 nights, which is a big edge for character meals and popular restaurants.
For example, a family checking in on June 15 books every meal of the trip starting April 16. A family at an off-site hotel books one day at a time, 60 days before each date. That second family often finds the most popular breakfasts gone by their morning.
In fact, one or two sit-down meals a day is plenty on a first trip. Kids get tired, and a quick-service lunch keeps the park day moving.
Want dining and Lightning Lane handled for you? A Disney specialist can book both on the right mornings.
Plan My First Disney TripWhen Can You Book Lightning Lane for a First Trip?
Disney hotel guests can book Lightning Lane 7 days before check-in. Everyone else books 3 days before each park day. Both windows open at 7:00 AM Eastern in the My Disney Experience app, and hotel guests can book their whole stay, up to 14 days, that first morning.
Lightning Lane comes in three versions, and most first-time families only need Multi Pass on their two busiest park days. I break down all three passes, prices and which one fits your family in how Disney World Lightning Lane works.
On booking morning, grab the hardest rides first. At Magic Kingdom that usually means Peter Pan’s Flight or Space Mountain, at Hollywood Studios Slinky Dog Dash, and at EPCOT Frozen Ever After or Test Track. Then fill in the easier rides around them.
Either way, link every ticket in your party in the app before booking morning. A missing ticket can stall your booking right when the best rides go.
What Is the Best Time of Year for a First Disney Trip?

The quietest time for a first Disney World trip is September after Labor Day, usually crowd level 4 to 5 out of 10, followed by early November and early December. The busiest are Christmas through New Year’s, spring break and Easter, and Thanksgiving week, at 8 to 10.
Our Walt Disney World crowd calendar rates every day from 1 to 10 for all four parks, 18 months ahead. Pick a week with more low numbers, and your first trip will feel like a vacation instead of a marathon.
That said, the best time is when your family can go together. If school breaks are your only option, go anyway and plan around the crowds with Early Entry and a smart Lightning Lane plan.
How Do You Pace a First Disney World Trip?

Pace a first trip with early mornings, a midday break and one late night. Arrive for Early Entry, ride the big rides while lines are short, then head back to the hotel after lunch when the heat and crowds peak.
When I took all four grandkids to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, Ben was 5. Their favorite memory wasn’t a ride at all. It was breakfast at Boma with POG juice, Mickey waffles and bacon, and Pie and I watching the giraffes on the savanna early one morning.
So build in time at your hotel. A first trip packed with rides from open to close leaves everyone exhausted by day three. Your kids will remember the pool, the breakfast and the fireworks just as much as the rides.

Build My Disney PlanFrequently Asked Questions About Planning a First Disney World Trip
How Far in Advance Should You Plan a Disney World Trip?
Families should start planning a Disney World trip 9 to 12 months ahead, and book the hotel as soon as dates open. 2027 dates through October 31 went on sale in mid-April 2026, and dining opens 60 days before each date.
In practice, if I were planning a first trip today, I’d book the hotel or package now with the $200 deposit and fill in the rest later. You can change or cancel a package more than 30 days out, so booking early costs you very little.
Should You Stay at a Disney Hotel on a First Trip?
Staying at a Disney Resort hotel gives first-time families three real advantages: 30-minute Early Entry at every park every day, dining reservations for the whole stay at 60 days, and Lightning Lane booking 7 days before check-in.
For that reason, I’d stay on property for a first trip if the budget allows. Disney’s Value resorts cost less than many families expect, and the easy transportation and hotel benefits make a first visit much simpler.
Is 3 Days Enough for Disney World?
Three days is enough for a first taste of Disney World, but not for all four parks. With 3 park days, most families pick Magic Kingdom plus the two parks that best match their kids’ interests.
With only three days, I’d skip the rest day, stay at a Disney hotel for Early Entry, and consider Lightning Lane Multi Pass on your Magic Kingdom day. You’ll see a lot more with that 30-minute head start each morning.
What Is the Best Age for a First Trip to Disney World?
Ages 5 to 10 are often the sweet spot for a first Disney World trip. Kids that age clear many height limits, still believe in the magic, and can handle a full park day with a midday break.
Even so, I wouldn’t wait if the grandparents are ready now. Children under 3 get in without a ticket, so a toddler trip costs less, and the photos of a 2-year-old meeting Mickey are priceless. Just plan more rest days.
