Monstropolis is the Monsters, Inc. land opening in phases at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2027. Here is every detail Disney has actually confirmed, including the one thing about the coaster that most families have wrong.

When Does Monstropolis Open at Disney’s Hollywood Studios?
Parts of Monstropolis open at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2027. Disney has not announced a specific date.
The land opens in phases, and that detail matters more than the year does. The Monsters, Inc. door coaster will not be ready when the first areas welcome guests.
Disney confirmed five named locations in its D23 announcement: the Glob Theater, Harryhausen’s Restaurant, Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza, the Monsters University Alumni Club, and the Scareporium. The land sits on the old Grand Avenue site, which closed to guests on June 7, 2025.
Beyond that, the opening celebration has a name of its own. Disney is calling it H.U.M.A.N. Day, short for Humans Understanding Monsters Are Nice.

If your family is mapping out a 2027 Walt Disney World trip, that phased opening is the date you plan around.

Monstropolis Quick Facts
Where is Monstropolis being built?
Monstropolis is going in on the south side of Disney’s Hollywood Studios, on the former Grand Avenue site that closed to guests on June 7, 2025.
What is the Monsters, Inc. coaster called?
Disney has not given it an official name and refers to it only as the door coaster. It will be the first suspended coaster and the first vertical lift at any Disney park.
Does the coaster open at the same time as the land?
No. Disney confirmed that work continues on the door coaster while parts of Monstropolis open to guests in 2027.
What Rides, Restaurants and Shops Are Coming to Monstropolis?
Disney has named five locations in Monstropolis. Three of them serve food or drinks.
The Glob Theater anchors the land with a show called Welcome to Monstropolis. Mike Wazowski and Sulley host it, and the premise is that the monsters are introducing humans to their city for the first time.

For dining, Harryhausen’s Restaurant is the table service spot, lifted straight out of the movie. Disney has said it features an Audio-Animatronics sushi chef with multiple tentacles, and Walt Disney Imagineering VP Creative Michael Hundgen described the menu as “a menu unlike anything else we offer at Walt Disney World.”

On top of that, Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza handles the quick service side. It is themed to Archie, the six-legged mascot from Fear Tech, and it sells pizza by the slice.
Next door, the Monsters University Alumni Club is a lounge full of school memorabilia, including a section devoted to the elite Scarer’s Club. The Scareporium rounds things out as the land’s shop.
None of the grandkids will let me walk past a place called the Scareporium without going in. I have made peace with that.

Try the Scream-O-Meter: How Loud Can Your Family Scream?
Monstropolis runs on screams, so we built a scream canister of our own. Tap the button, give us your best four-second scream, and the Scream-O-Meter turns it into a Scream Score with a level and badges you can send to the rest of the family. It listens through your browser only; nothing is recorded or uploaded.

Your scream never leaves your device. Nothing is recorded or uploaded. Privacy Policy
For fun only. Keep your device at arm's length, never scream near someone's ears, and stop if you feel uncomfortable.
Want the full-screen version to pass around the room? Play the Scream-O-Meter full-screen.
The scoring runs 0 to 100, and the levels climb from “Roz Heard That” all the way up to “2319!!!” Badges include the Boo Jump Scare and the Mike Wazowski Special.
Best of all, it is free, it works in Safari and Chrome on phones, and there is a mute button if the sound effects are too much for a quiet room.
Run the Scream-O-Meter once at home before your trip and screenshot everybody’s score. Bring it up again in the parks on the day you visit Hollywood Studios and let the kids try to beat their own number. It turns a fifteen minute wait in line into a competition, and it costs you nothing. And the other people in line will love it.
What Makes the Monsters, Inc. Door Coaster Different?
The door coaster will be the first suspended coaster at any Disney park, and the first with a vertical lift. Disney confirmed both firsts when it revealed the ride, so those are not marketing embellishments.
Here is how the ride works. You board your vehicle on the ground, and then claws hoist you straight up into the air exactly the way the doors move in the film, before sending you into the door vault.

Even so, Disney has kept the rest quiet on purpose. The company has said the ride vehicle details are “locked up in a laugh canister,” which is a cute way of saying they are not telling us yet.
In fact, Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter said of the project, “It really is like a dream come true for us.” Imagineer Michael Hundgen framed the goal as “an experience that’s as memorable and fun as the film.”
That said, what Disney still has not given the ride is a name. Every name you see floating around online, including the ones I like better than Disney’s, is a fan invention. Until Disney says otherwise, it is the door coaster.
Do not promise the coaster to a little one yet. Disney has not published a height requirement, and a suspended coaster with a vertical lift is not likely to be a 32 inch ride. If you have a child who measures under 40 inches in 2027, plan the day around the show and the dining and treat the coaster as a bonus.
What Did Monstropolis Replace at Hollywood Studios?
Monstropolis is being built on the Grand Avenue site. Disney announced the phased closure in January 2025, and the area came down in stages that spring.

Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano served its last meal on May 10, 2025. Muppet*Vision 3D and PizzeRizzo both closed on June 7, 2025, which ended a run that started in 1991.
The Muppets did not leave the park, though. Disney moved them over to Sunset Boulevard, where they took over Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster and turned it into a music festival.
I will be straight with you about this one. Losing Muppet*Vision stung, and plenty of longtime Disney World families felt the same way. Getting the Muppets back on a headliner coaster took some of that sting out.
Should Your Family Plan a 2027 Trip Around Monstropolis?
Book it for the show, the theming and the food, and 2027 will deliver. Build the whole trip around riding the coaster and you are gambling.

If the coaster is the reason you are going, I would wait. Disney has told us plainly that work continues on the door coaster while the rest of the land opens, so an early 2027 visit could mean walls where the ride is supposed to be.
Meanwhile, phased openings tend to concentrate crowds into a smaller footprint. A half-open land pulls the same number of people into fewer square feet, which is worth knowing before you pick your week.
In addition, Hollywood Studios is mid-rebuild in more places than one. The Magic of Disney Animation took over the old Star Wars: Launch Bay space, so the park your family walks in 2027 will not be the park you remember.
What’s more, Monstropolis is not the only 2027 opening at Walt Disney World. Tropical Americas at Disney’s Animal Kingdom lands the same year, which gives a 2027 trip two new reasons to go rather than one.
Even better, this land looks like a strong fit for families with small kids who love the movies, coaster or no coaster. A show, a themed lounge, a sit-down restaurant and a shop give you plenty to do at a height nobody has to measure for.
My advice is to book the trip for the experience you can confirm, and let the coaster be the thing that makes a return visit worth it.
Watch for the Harryhausen’s Restaurant booking window rather than the land opening date. Table service reservations at Walt Disney World open 60 days ahead, so the day Harryhausen’s appears in the dining system will tell you more about the real opening timing than any announcement will. Ask your advisor to watch that window for you.
Frequently Asked Questions About Monstropolis

Has Disney Announced a Monstropolis Opening Date?
Disney has not announced a Monstropolis opening date. The company has confirmed only that parts of the land open at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2027, and that it opens in phases rather than all at once.
What that means for your family is that 2027 is a planning window rather than a date, so I would not book flights around it yet. Disney usually confirms a specific date a few months out, and table service dining opens 60 days ahead, so you will get warning before it matters. Pick your 2027 travel window for the reasons you would normally pick one, school breaks, crowd levels and price, then treat Monstropolis as a bonus if the timing lands.
What Rides Will Monstropolis Have?
Monstropolis has one confirmed ride, the Monsters, Inc. door coaster, plus a stage show called Welcome to Monstropolis at the Glob Theater. Disney has not announced a second attraction for the land.
The short version is that this is a dining and show land first and a thrill land second. Three of the five named locations serve food or drinks, and one of the other two is a shop. If you are picturing something on the scale of a multi ride land, adjust that picture down to one headline coaster, one show, and a beautifully themed block to eat and browse in.
Is Monstropolis at Disney World or Disneyland?
Monstropolis is being built at Walt Disney World in Florida, inside Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Disney has not announced a Monstropolis land for Disneyland in California.
In practice this trips up a lot of families, and it is a fair thing to mix up, because both coasts have carried Monsters, Inc. attractions at different points. The land going up on the south side of Disney’s Hollywood Studios is a Florida project, built on the ground that used to hold Grand Avenue. If you are planning a California trip and hoping to see this one, you will need a Florida trip instead.
What Happened to Muppet*Vision 3D When Monstropolis Was Built?
Muppet*Vision 3D closed permanently on June 7, 2025 to make room for Monstropolis, and PizzeRizzo closed the same day. Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano served its final meal on May 10, 2025.
Here is the part that matters to longtime Walt Disney World families: the Muppets themselves did not leave the park. Disney moved them over to Sunset Boulevard, where they took over Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster and turned it into a music festival. Muppet*Vision had run since 1991, so losing it genuinely hurt, and trading it for a headliner coaster took some of that sting out.
Will the Monsters, Inc. Coaster Have a Height Requirement?
Disney has not published a height requirement for the Monsters, Inc. door coaster. The ride is a suspended coaster with a vertical lift, both firsts for a Disney park, which points toward a real minimum height rather than an all ages attraction.
The simple test I give families is to plan for the strictest version and let yourself be pleasantly surprised. I am not going to guess a number here, because a wrong guess turns into a very sad kid standing at a measuring stick. If you have a smaller child traveling in 2027, build the visit around the show and the dining, then check our Walt Disney World height requirements guide once Disney publishes the official figure.
