What Is Isle of Berk at Universal Epic Universe?

Isle of Berk is the How to Train Your Dragon land at Universal Epic Universe, and it is the largest of the park’s worlds. It opened May 22, 2025, and spans 15.5 acres built around a central lagoon. The land holds three rides, one big indoor show, a sprawling kids play area, four shops, and several places to eat.

This world is built for families, especially those with dragon-loving kids ages 4 to 12. You will find a family coaster with a 40-inch minimum, a soak-everyone boat battle, character meet-and-greets with Toothless himself, and some of the best theming Universal has ever built. My grandson Ben has loved Toothless since before he could say “Night Fury,” so this was the land he begged for first.

Isle of Berk is one of five worlds inside Epic Universe, reached through a portal from the central Celestial Park hub. If you want the big picture on the whole park, start with our Epic Universe planning guide.

What is the height requirement for Isle of Berk rides?
Hiccup’s Wing Gliders requires 40 inches, Dragon Racer’s Rally requires 48 inches, and Fyre Drill has no minimum height.

Is Isle of Berk good for little kids?
Yes. With a 40-inch family coaster, a no-height water ride, and a free play area, Isle of Berk suits kids ages 4 and up.

How Many Rides Does Isle of Berk Have?

Isle of Berk has three rides, plus one show and a play area. The rides span a family coaster, a control-your-own spinner, and a soak-everyone water battle. Height minimums range from none up to 48 inches.

Hiccup’s Wing Gliders is the family coaster, with a 40-inch minimum, and it is smooth enough for first-time coaster riders. Dragon Racer’s Rally is the thrill pick at 48 inches, where you steer your own dragon trainer and decide how wild it gets. Fyre Drill is the interactive water ride with no minimum height, so even the littlest Vikings can climb aboard.

On top of the rides, the land includes one indoor show and the Viking Training Camp play area. That mix is why Isle of Berk offers more to do than any other land at the park. For the full ride-by-ride breakdown with intensity notes and best-age guidance, watch for our dedicated Isle of Berk attractions guide.

What Are the Height Requirements at Isle of Berk?

Height rules at Isle of Berk run from no minimum up to 48 inches. Measure your kids before you go so nobody faces a surprise at the gate. Children under 48 inches need a supervising companion on all three rides.

Fyre Drill has no minimum height, though children under 48 inches must ride with a companion and hand-held infants are not allowed. Hiccup’s Wing Gliders requires 40 inches, with a companion needed under 48 inches. Dragon Racer’s Rally sets the highest bar at 48 inches.

That spread matters for planning. A 42-inch dragon fan can ride the coaster and the water ride with you, but will sit out Dragon Racer’s Rally until they grow a bit. Ben measured in right at the coaster line on our trip, which made Hiccup’s Wing Gliders the win of the day. Rider swap is available, so two adults can take turns without waiting in line twice.

Favorite Grampy’s Insider Tip Bring a dry shirt for every kid riding Fyre Drill, and a gallon zip bag for phones. You will get soaked, not splashed. We learned this the wet way, and Ben squelched around in soggy sneakers until I bought him a fresh pair of socks.

What Is the Theming Like at Isle of Berk?

The theming at Isle of Berk is among the best Universal has ever built. Two 40-foot Viking statues guard the portal, and a lagoon dotted with dragon boats sits at the center. The whole land is set during the peaceful years between the second and third How to Train Your Dragon films.

What sells it is the craft. Universal used six real-timber buildings, nine-foot-tall doors, and benches carved by chainsaw to make the village feel hand-built. Dozens of dragon figures move along the rooftops and alleys, some full animatronics and some simple repeating motions, and together they make Berk feel alive. You will spot sheep trying to pass themselves off as Terrible Terror dragons, and the occasional burst of dragon fire.

Even better, the land rewards wandering. Bridges, side paths, and offshoots lead to hidden Easter eggs, carved stones, and quiet corners. We spent a full 20 minutes just walking and pointing before we ever got in a ride line. For a family that loves the films, the village itself is the attraction.

What Shows and Characters Are at Isle of Berk?

Isle of Berk offers one major show and a strong character lineup. The Untrainable Dragon is an indoor Broadway-style production with puppetry, music, and a 27-foot dragon that soars over the audience. Characters meet throughout the day at the Haddock Paddock.

The show is a real highlight for fans. It follows Hiccup, Toothless, Gobber, and Astrid as they puzzle out a mysterious new dragon, and it runs in the park’s largest theater with air conditioning and indoor seating. That makes it a smart midday break when the Florida heat peaks.

For characters, this land delivers. You can meet Toothless and Hiccup at the Haddock Paddock, and Astrid often roams with her walking Stormfly puppet nearby. The twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut wander the streets heckling each other and anyone who stops, and Gobber works his forge swapping out his prosthetic arm pieces. Ben still talks about the moment Toothless leaned in for a nuzzle, which is the kind of memory you cannot script.

Favorite Grampy’s Insider Tip Meet Toothless first thing during Early Park Admission if your hotel offers it. The line for Toothless is at its shortest right at open. We walked up with almost no wait at rope drop, then watched it stretch long by late morning.

Where Can You Eat in Isle of Berk?

Isle of Berk has one sit-down restaurant and three quick stops. Mead Hall is the main gathering hall, serving Viking-style meats, fish, sandwiches, and desserts. Spit Fyre Grill, Hooligan’s Grog & Gruel, and the How to Treat Your Dragon bakery round out the quick bites.

Mead Hall is carved into the mountain rock and acts as Berk’s feast hall, with the widest menu and indoor seating. Spit Fyre Grill is quick-service overlooking the Fyre Drill water ride, known for rice bowls and the much-talked-about mac and cheese cones. Hooligan’s Grog & Gruel is a racing-themed snack stand near the play area for fast bites.

For something sweet, How to Treat Your Dragon is the bakery, packed with dragon eggs, cake pops, and sheep-shaped marshmallows. Our full Isle of Berk dining guide will cover the menus, the must-try dishes, and the ones I would skip, with prices. Until then, you can compare nearby options in our Celestial Park dining guide.

Is Isle of Berk Worth It for Your Family?

Isle of Berk is worth it for most families, especially those with kids who love dragons or want gentler thrills. It carries the widest range of activities of any land at Epic Universe, from a no-height water ride to a 48-inch spinner. The theming alone justifies the walk through the portal.

That said, the trade-offs are real. If your crew is all teens chasing the biggest coasters, the headliners in other lands will pull harder, and Dragon Racer’s Rally runs short. The land leans younger than Super Nintendo World or the Ministry of Magic. Some visitors also find Dragon Racer’s Rally tricky to flip the way the films suggest, so manage expectations there.

For families with kids roughly 4 to 12, though, this is a sweet spot. The mix of a forgiving coaster, a soak ride, a free play area, and meaningful character moments fills hours without meltdowns. If your littlest ones are not quite ready for thrills, our guide on whether Epic Universe works for toddlers and little kids breaks down the whole park by age.

How Does Express Pass Work at Isle of Berk?

Express Pass covers only one ride at Isle of Berk. Hiccup’s Wing Gliders accepts Universal Express Pass, while Dragon Racer’s Rally and Fyre Drill do not. Plan your timing around that gap.

This matters more than it sounds. On a busy day, the coaster line can be skipped with Express, but the water ride and the spinner still need old-fashioned strategy. Ride those two early or late, when waits are lowest. Hiccup’s Wing Gliders also offers a single-rider line, which can cut your wait further if your group is willing to split up.

Keep in mind that the free Express Unlimited perk from Universal’s premier hotels does not extend to Epic Universe. So if you want Express here, you buy it separately. To see exactly which rides across the resort exclude Express, check our guide to Universal rides that do not accept Express Pass. Frequently Asked Questions About Isle of Berk

How Long Should You Spend at Isle of Berk?

Plan on two to three hours to enjoy Isle of Berk without rushing. That gives your family time for all three rides, a character meet at the Haddock Paddock, the Untrainable Dragon show, and a stretch at the Viking Training Camp play area. If you have a dragon superfan or younger kids who love the play area, you could easily spend half a day here. We came back a second time just so Ben could ride Hiccup’s Wing Gliders again, because once is never enough with a coaster he loves.

Is Isle of Berk Good for Toddlers?

Isle of Berk works well for toddlers, with some limits. Fyre Drill has no minimum height, so a toddler can ride with a supervising companion, and the Viking Training Camp play area is free and full of shade. The character meets and the moving dragons throughout the village delight little ones who are not riding much at all. The two height-restricted rides will be off limits until they grow, but there is still plenty to fill a happy morning for the youngest Vikings.

Do You Need to See the How to Train Your Dragon Movies First?

You do not need to see the films to enjoy Isle of Berk, but it helps. The theming, characters, and ride stories all pull from the movies, so fans catch more of the Easter eggs and emotional payoff. That said, the land stands on its own as a stunning Viking village with fun rides and friendly dragons. If you have a weekend before your trip, watching the first film together is a lovely way to build excitement, the way Ben and I did over popcorn the week before we flew down.

Where Is Isle of Berk Located in Epic Universe?

Isle of Berk sits as one of the four outer worlds surrounding Celestial Park, the central hub of Epic Universe. You reach it through a themed portal from Celestial Park, the same way you reach Super Nintendo World, Dark Universe, and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic. It is the largest land in the park, so give yourself a little extra walking time. Many families head here first at rope drop, since most crowds rush toward Nintendo and the Ministry of Magic.
