What Are the Locker Requirements at Universal Orlando?
Universal Orlando enforces six different carry-on categories across its three theme parks, ranging from strict metal-detector rides to no-locker family rides. Three rides require all loose items, even phones, to be stored in lockers before riding: Jurassic World VelociCoaster, The Incredible Hulk Coaster, and Stardust Racers. Seven additional rides require lockers for bags, though small secure waist packs are widely reported to be allowed at some queues at Team Member discretion.
Free ride lockers measure approximately 14 inches wide by 5.5 inches high by 16.9 inches deep at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, with slightly larger lockers at Epic Universe. For families planning a Universal Orlando trip, knowing the locker rules before you arrive saves time at every ride.
This guide is based in part on a locker-requirement spreadsheet originally prepared by Josh Grabiec and shared in the Universal Studios & EPIC Universe Friends & Family — Tips and Tricks Facebook Group, where Josh is an active and helpful member. We expanded the information with additional research, current source checks, and family-planning tips.

Universal Orlando Lockers Quick Facts
Before diving into ride-by-ride details, here are the three most-asked questions families bring to a Universal trip.
How much do Universal Orlando lockers cost?
Most ride lockers are free while you wait and ride. All-day lockers at the front of each park are commonly reported at $15 for large and $20 for family size. Water ride paid lockers are commonly reported at $5 for small and $6 for large for the first 90 minutes. Pricing can change, so confirm at the locker kiosk before use.
What size are the free ride lockers?
Free ride lockers at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure measure approximately 14 inches wide by 5.5 inches high by 16.9 inches deep. Epic Universe ride lockers are slightly larger at approximately 11.8 inches by 11 inches by 13 inches.
Which Universal rides require metal detectors?
Three rides require metal detectors and ban all loose items: Jurassic World VelociCoaster, The Incredible Hulk Coaster, and Stardust Racers at Epic Universe.
Which Universal Orlando Rides Have Metal Detectors?
The three metal-detector rides are Jurassic World VelociCoaster and The Incredible Hulk Coaster at Islands of Adventure, and Stardust Racers at Epic Universe. These rides ban phones, wallets, keys, coins, hats, and any item that could fly out at high speed. At all three, riders pass through a security wand scan and store every item in a free locker before boarding. A lanyard holding your park ticket may be worn, but it must be tucked inside your shirt before you board.

Stardust Racers adds one extra rule. If your family bought Power-Up Bands at Super Nintendo World, those bands must also go in the locker. Universal does not allow them on the ride.
Which Universal Orlando Rides Require Lockers?
Each park has its own list of locker-required rides, plus rides where lockers exist but are optional. Below are the full breakdowns by park, including rides currently closed for refurbishment in 2026.
Universal Studios Florida Locker Requirements

A heads-up on two Universal Studios Florida changes. Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, which used to be the park’s metal-detector coaster, is now permanently closed. Universal has announced Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift as its replacement, with an expected 2027 opening. Fast & Furious: Supercharged is also scheduled to close permanently in 2027 to make way for the new coaster.
Islands of Adventure Locker Requirements
Islands of Adventure has the most locker activity of the three parks, with two metal-detector rides, two locker-required rides, and three paid optional water ride lockers.

What Size Are Universal Orlando Ride Lockers?
Locker size is the single most-asked question I see from families planning a Universal trip. Free ride lockers are designed for small items, not full-size backpacks. Here is what you can expect at each park.
Standard Ride Locker Size at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure
The standard free ride lockers at the two original Universal parks measure approximately 14 inches wide by 5.5 inches high by 16.9 inches deep. That is a thin slot. A small sling bag, a fanny pack, or a flat drawstring bag fits well. A stuffed mini backpack may need some squishing. A full-size family backpack often will not fit at all.
Larger Ride Locker Size
For bigger items, larger ride lockers are available at most locker-required rides, commonly reported at approximately 12 inches wide by 13 inches high by 16.9 inches deep. These usually require a small upfront payment, then run extra charges if you exceed the time window. Pricing can change, so check the locker kiosk before use.
Epic Universe Ride Locker Size
Epic Universe ride lockers are reported to be larger than the older standard lockers, at approximately 11.8 inches by 11 inches by 13 inches. That extra depth and height matters for families because it is easier to fit a wand box, a refillable souvenir cup, or a small-to-medium backpack.
What Can Fit in a Universal Orlando Locker?
The honest answer is that the free ride lockers are designed for small items only. Here is a practical fit guide for the things families ask about most.
| Item | Likely Fit in Free Ride Locker? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Phone, wallet, keys | Yes | Not allowed in pockets on metal-detector rides |
| Small purse | Usually | Depends on shape |
| Fanny pack (3-prong) | Usually | Must be worn around waist if allowed on ride |
| Loungefly mini backpack | Usually if not overpacked | May need to squish |
| Full-size backpack | Often no in small lockers | May require paid larger locker |
| Harry Potter wand box | Depends on size | Some wand boxes are longer than the small free lockers |
| Refillable souvenir cup | Depends | Epic Universe lockers may fit upright; older lockers may require laying down |
| Themed popcorn bucket | Often no | Many themed buckets do not fit in free ride lockers |
| Camera gear | Use caution | Consider paid locker or a non-rider in your group |
| Medical bag | Ask a Team Member | Do not assume. See the medical section below. |

Are Universal Orlando Ride Lockers Free?
Some Universal Orlando ride lockers are free while you ride, but not every locker is free. Here is the breakdown by type.
Free While You Ride
For rides where Universal requires you to store loose items, free single-use lockers are provided in or near the queue. These lockers automatically calculate the wait plus the ride length plus a small cushion. You will not be charged if you retrieve your items within that window. If you go over the time window, additional charges apply.
When You May Pay Extra
Larger ride lockers, all-day lockers, and water-ride lockers cost extra. Larger ride lockers usually run a small upfront fee, then around $3 per 30 minutes if you exceed the wait window. Daily maximums are commonly reported between $20 and $25 depending on the park and locker type. Pricing can change, so confirm at the locker kiosk before use.
Why Water Ride Lockers Usually Cost Money
Universal does not require lockers on water rides because you can bring your stuff aboard. The downside is that your stuff may get soaked. Onboard storage compartments help but are not waterproof. For families with phones and cameras they want to keep dry, the paid water-ride lockers are commonly reported at $5 for the smaller size and $6 for the larger one for the first 90 minutes.
Ride Lockers vs. Front-of-Park All-Day Lockers
Every Universal Orlando park has all-day rental lockers near the entrance, separate from the free ride lockers inside the park. Here is how to decide which to use.
| Locker Type | Best For | Not Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Free ride locker | Phone, keys, small bag during one ride | All-day storage |
| Larger ride locker | Bigger bag for one ride | Repeated use across multiple rides |
| Water ride locker | Keeping electronics dry | Avoiding all locker stops |
| Front-of-park all-day locker | Extra clothes, towels, large bags, purchases | Items you need before every ride |
Swipe left to see all columns on mobile.
Here is where to find the front-of-park lockers at each park. At Universal Studios Florida, all-day lockers are located just inside the turnstiles in the Production Central area. At Islands of Adventure, a set is located just inside the turnstiles, to the far left near the stroller and wheelchair rental. At Epic Universe, the main set is in Celestial Park near Chronos, plus additional locker kiosks throughout the park at Super Nintendo World, Isle of Berk, Dark Universe, and Ministry of Magic.
Front-of-park lockers are best for items you do not need often during the day. Ride lockers are best for small items you only need to stow while you ride.
How Do Epic Universe Lockers Work Differently?
Epic Universe launched in May 2025 with the newest locker technology at Universal Orlando, and there are a few features worth knowing about before you go.

The most exciting is that Epic Universe lockers now offer optional facial recognition. Instead of scanning a park ticket, you can press a button on the kiosk, register a photo, and use facial scan again to retrieve your items. This means kids and grandparents do not have to keep their park tickets handy every time they want to lock or unlock a locker. Facial recognition is optional. Park ticket scanning still works.
In addition, the Epic Universe ride lockers are slightly larger than the older parks, and additional locker kiosks are spread throughout the park rather than only at the entrance. This makes it easier to drop bags near the land you are visiting instead of trekking back to the front. Better still, the all-day lockers come in two sizes at Epic Universe, commonly reported at approximately 11 inches by 11.75 inches by 17.7 inches for large and 11 inches by 17.75 inches by 17.7 inches for family size.
Can You Wear a Fanny Pack on Universal Orlando Rides?
Yes, but the type and how you wear it matter. Universal team members have final say at the ride entrance.
The 3-Prong Fanny Pack Rule
A 3-prong fanny pack is a waist pack with a secure plastic 3-prong clip buckle. Universal’s official safety guide does not specifically address fanny packs, but on locker-required rides without metal detectors, Team Members are widely reported to allow the pack on the ride if it is worn around your waist and does not interfere with the ride restraint. The rides where this often works include Mummy, Men in Black, Gringotts, Forbidden Journey, Hagrid’s, Monsters Unchained, and Hiccup’s Wing Gliders.
While not guaranteed every of the time, this can be an easy way for families to skip the locker process at some rides. In fact, on Hagrid’s specifically, a 3-prong fanny pack worn around the waist is widely reported to be permitted at Team Member discretion. As always, the Team Member at the queue entrance has the final say.
Rides Where a Fanny Pack Will Not Help
A 3-prong fanny pack does not get around the metal-detector rule. For Jurassic World VelociCoaster, The Incredible Hulk Coaster, and Stardust Racers, every item goes in a locker. The metal detector catches phones, wallets, and pretty much anything else. Plan accordingly.
What About Crossbody Bags?
Crossbody bags are less predictable. On some rides that do not require lockers, a small crossbody bag may be allowed. On locker-required rides, crossbody bags are not treated the same as a 3-prong waist pack. The waist pack works because of the secure clip and tight waist fit. A crossbody can swing during the ride, so Team Members are more cautious.
Here is the rule of thumb: if a Team Member says you cannot bring it on, do not argue. Take it to the locker and enjoy the ride.
What About Medical Bags, Inhalers, EpiPens, and Special Needs?
This is an important question for many families. The best practice at Universal Orlando is to talk to a Team Member before entering the queue if you need to carry medical items through a locker-required ride. Universal staff can advise on accommodations and, where appropriate, allow medical items into the queue when typical loose articles would not be allowed.
A few practical tips that help families with medical needs:
For one thing, ask before entering the queue, not at the ride boarding area. The Team Members at the entrance can radio ahead and arrange the appropriate accommodation. Meanwhile, do not hide medical devices or items in pockets. Be open about what you need and why. Bring only what you truly need for the duration of the ride. Use clear labeling on medical bags where possible, and build extra time into your day for these conversations.
Naturally, if your family member uses an EpiPen, inhaler, insulin pump, or similar device, plan to discuss it with a Team Member at every locker-required ride. The accommodation is usually quick.
If your kid uses an EpiPen, bring a small medical ID card that lists what the device is and why it is needed. It speeds up every conversation at every ride. Universal staff have seen it all and are generally great about accommodations, but a quick card saves time at every queue entrance.
Best Bags to Bring to Universal Orlando
If you want to keep locker stops to a minimum, the bag you carry matters more than anything else. Here is what works well for families and what to avoid.
For day bags that play nicely with the locker system, consider a slim 3-prong fanny pack, a flat drawstring bag, a small sling bag, a mini backpack that is not overpacked, a waterproof phone pouch for water rides, or a lanyard for tickets, Express Pass, and room key. Each of these fits comfortably in a free ride locker and keeps your hands free between attractions.
On the other hand, certain bags create headaches you do not need. Avoid stuffed full-size backpacks, hard-sided bags, oversized souvenir bags before thrill rides, loose phones in athletic shorts, and bulky crossbody bags on heavy coaster days. Of course, you can always grab a souvenir later in the day after you have done the locker-heavy rides.
Pack the smallest bag your family can manage. Every minute you save at a locker bank is a minute you spend with your kids in front of Hagrid’s instead. My daughter Nikki swears by a slim sling for her park days and has never paid for a larger locker.
Favorite Grampy’s Locker Planning Tips by Family Type
Every family at Universal is a little different. Here is how I would plan the locker situation for four common family setups.

Best Plan for Families with Young Kids
For families with young kids, use one small park bag plus a front-of-park all-day locker for extra clothes and bulky items. On thrill rides, use Child Swap as a “bag swap.” One non-rider stays with the gear in the Child Swap room, and the rest of the family rides without a locker stop. This saves real time at Hagrid’s, Forbidden Journey, and Gringotts where the locker banks get crowded.
Best Plan for Thrill-Ride Fans
For thrill-ride fans, use pockets plus a 3-prong fanny pack and expect lockers at the three metal-detector rides. There is no workaround for VelociCoaster, Hulk, or Stardust Racers. Plan to ride these early or late in the day when the locker banks are less crowded.
Best Plan for Harry Potter Fans with Wands
For Harry Potter fans buying wands, plan ahead because some wand boxes are awkward in smaller lockers. Better still, consider buying wands later in the day after you have done Forbidden Journey, Hagrid’s, and Gringotts. Or have a non-rider hold the wand box at the wand shop while the rest of your family rides.
Best Plan for Water Ride Days
For water ride days, bring a waterproof phone pouch or pay for the optional water-ride lockers if you care about keeping electronics dry. Better yet, plan your water rides for the same part of the day so you can change clothes once at a front-of-park locker afterward. Popeye and Ripsaw Falls will soak you. Plan for it.
Frequently Asked Questions About Universal Orlando Lockers
Here are the five questions families ask me most often about Universal lockers, in my own words.
What Happens If I Forget My Locker Number?
If you forget your locker number, scan your park ticket at any locker kiosk in the same locker bank. The screen will display your locker station and number. If you still cannot find it, ask the locker attendant. They can look up your locker and help you retrieve your belongings. I always tell families to share the locker number with everyone in the group so somebody remembers.
What If the Ride Breaks Down and I Go Over My Free Locker Time?
If the ride breaks down and you go over your free locker time through no fault of your own, find the locker attendant. They can override the overtime charge for ride breakdowns. This is a common situation at Universal, especially on Hagrid’s, and the staff are used to handling it. Do not panic and do not pay the charge before asking.
Are Universal Orlando Lockers Waterproof?
Universal Orlando lockers are not technically waterproof. Most are sheltered from direct rain, but heavy rain can still cause water to seep in. For rainy days, wrap valuables in a plastic bag or pack a small waterproof pouch. Water-ride lockers are more important on rainy days than on sunny ones because the onboard storage on water rides is not guaranteed to stay dry.
Do I Have to Use a Locker if My Child Is Doing Child Swap?
Child Swap can reduce locker hassle on many rides because one non-rider stays with the kids and the bags while the rest of the family rides. To use Child Swap as a “bag swap,” tell the Team Member at the queue entrance that you are using Child Swap. If you do not, you will be directed to stow your belongings as you enter the queue. On the three metal-detector rides, VelociCoaster, Hulk, and Stardust Racers, every loose item still must be stored before the riding guests pass through security screening. Always ask the Team Member at the attraction entrance before relying on Child Swap to skip a locker stop.
Can I Share a Front-of-Park Locker With Another Family?
You can share a front-of-park all-day locker with another family, but only one person can scan their ticket to open it. The family that paid for the locker controls access. Best of all, the family-sized lockers at Universal Studios Florida and Epic Universe are spacious enough to share between two smaller families if you coordinate ahead of time. Just be sure you are with the family member whose ticket opens it when you need to grab something.
How a Concierge Travel Advisor Helps Families Plan a Universal Vacation
Locker requirements are one small piece of a much bigger Universal Orlando trip. The rest of the trip includes ticket bundle decisions, hotel selection, Universal Express Pass strategy, dining reservations, height requirement planning, Early Park Admission, and how to fit Epic Universe into your itinerary alongside Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure.

For one thing, a concierge travel advisor at Favorite Grampy Travels handles the parts of a Universal trip that overwhelm most families. We help you pick the right hotel (some Universal hotels include free Universal Express Pass, which cuts wait times and reduces locker line stress). We figure out your park days, your Early Park Admission strategy, and your dining reservations. In addition, your advisor may charge a planning fee based on the complexity of your trip, and the value of having a real person handle problems is what families tell us they appreciate most.
