How to Become a Disney Vacation Planner

You don’t apply to Disney. You join an authorized travel agency, complete Disney’s training through that agency, and sell Disney vacations as an independent travel advisor.

Favorite Grampy Travels is an Authorized Disney Vacation Planner agency welcoming new and experienced advisors who have extensive personal travel experience at the parks.

The Agency Route

Does Disney Hire Travel Agents?

No. Disney partners with authorized travel agencies to sell Disney vacation packages and tickets. These travel agencies usually employ or contract with individuals who work as travel advisors from their home offices.

Disney does employ staff at its own reservation centers and at the parks. These jobs come with a wage, schedule, and commute. You can find these job openings on Disney’s career website.

To become a travel agent at an authorized travel agency, there are five steps:

  1. Research EarMarked travel agencies to find the right fit for you and follow the application process precisely.
  2. Once accepted, pay the onboarding cost or technology dues. At Favorite Grampy Travels, onboarding is $197 and annual tech dues are $315.
  3. You will likely need to complete a W-9, provide images of your ID, and approve a background check and credit check.
  4. You will be given login credentials to complete the College of Disney Knowledge online modules through the agency’s portal. This educational opportunity can take up to 14 days to complete.
  5. Once your training is complete, Favorite Grampy Travels allows you to start selling with the help of a mentor. You begin earning commission on your very first booking.

Notice which step Disney appears in. Fourth. Everything before it is between you and the agency, which is why the agency you pick matters more than anything Disney does. The full route into the work, past the Disney part, is in the complete guide to becoming a travel agent.

Disney Vacation Planner Quick Facts

Does Disney hire travel agents directly?

No. Disney sells through travel agencies, and advisors sell Disney as independent contractors under an agency’s credentials. Disney’s own reservation and park jobs are separate roles posted on its careers site.

Do you need a Disney certification to sell Disney vacations?

There is no Disney certification or license you can buy on your own. Disney’s travel advisor training sits behind its trade portal. Creating an account requires a travel agency ID and that travel agency’s approval.

What does it cost to start selling Disney vacations?

At Favorite Grampy Travels, there is $197 for onboarding plus annual technology dues of $315. These are paid once you are approved to start your new role as a travel advisor.

How long does Disney’s training take?

Up to two weeks through Disney’s trade portal. It is structured rather than self-paced, it comes with your agency affiliation, and other supplier programs can take as little as an afternoon.

What Disney Requires

What Does Disney Require Before You Can Sell Its Vacations?

Disney requires that you partner with an agency. Their trade portal at disneytravelagents.com is where advisor training and booking tools live, and its own terms limit the site to “authorized and registered travel agents” selling Disney products.

Creating an account there takes an agency ID number, IATA, CLIA, ACTA or TIDS, plus approval from the agency that holds it. You cannot register as a member of the public and you cannot buy your way in.

So the order runs agency first, Disney second. Here is who handles what:

Disney’s relationship sits with the agency rather than with you personally, which is the detail most guides skip. Favorite Grampy Travels is an Authorized Disney Vacation Planner agency, and what that gets you is access, training and support through the agency.

Training

Completing the College of Disney Knowledge can take up to two weeks. Disney’s travel advisor online training runs through online modules on a structured path, and finishing it is a real commitment rather than an afternoon of clicking blindly. Once finished, you will receive a certificate of completion that must be refreshed every year.

Other travel partners such as Universal, various cruise lines and all-inclusive resort brands each run their own educational programs. Some of those take just one afternoon while others can take months to complete. Your travel agency will enroll you in the education portals of the travel partners that match your specialties.

This education does not have an additional cost for travel advisors. However, you may find that investing in in-person educational opportunities would be beneficial to you. These can vary in time and financial commitment. Ask your travel agency for more details.

Startup Cost

What Does It Cost to Start Selling Disney Vacations?

The startup cost is usually less than most people guess. At Favorite Grampy Travels we require a $197 onboarding fee plus the first year’s tech dues of $315. The technology fee covers your agency email, your biography on the agency website and access to the client system (our CRM, Tern). It is collected only after you are approved to start, never before. Any amounts collected are nonrefundable.

Some new advisors expect to receive their CLIA discount card immediately. This usually costs about $120 to $150, depending on your travel agency affiliations. However, these cards come later, after you have earned them based on your cumulative sales volume. If you are interviewing with an agency that hands them out like candy, you may want to dig deeper into their values. The American Society of Travel Advisors warns consumers about card mills that sell credentials at a significant fee while buyers are led to expect travel at reduced fares.

Watch out for additional red flags when researching travel agencies. Any agency asking for $1,000 or more up front, or selling a “travel agent card” or “travel club,” is not an agency. Companies that are heavy on recruiting others to the business or that have a sales requirement should also give you pause. Be sure to check online reviews of the agency and make sure it has a strong reputation with its clients.

Another cost that may apply to you is the Florida Seller of Travel filing. If you live in Florida, or sell travel to someone who lives in Florida, the state requires you to register online and pay a $50 annual fee. If you do not live in Florida or sell to Florida residents, you do not need to worry about this added cost. Maryland’s new seller of travel law took effect October 1, 2026, and the details of who it covers are still being clarified, so ask your agency how it handles Maryland clients.

The Money

How Much Do Disney Travel Advisors Make?

Your earnings depend on how much you sell, the commission each booking generates, and your agency’s commission split. There isn’t a reliable published average specifically for independent advisors who specialize in Disney vacations.

The closest government figure is the Bureau of Labor Statistics median annual wage for travel agents, $50,160 as of May 2025, but it covers employed agents and leaves out the self-employed, which is what an independent advisor is.

At Favorite Grampy Travels, advisors start at 60% of the commission the agency receives, with opportunities to earn up to 85% as cumulative skills and sales grow. Advisors also keep 85% of their concierge planning fees. Commission payments go out twice a month by direct deposit after the agency has been paid and the client has completed travel.

A trip’s total price doesn’t give you the whole picture of what you’ll earn, as some of the travel costs may not earn commission, such as airfare and taxes. For a $10,000 booking example and payment timeline, read our guide to what travel agents actually make.

Favorite Grampy
Favorite Grampy's Insider TipAsk the agency to show you what you would earn on a Disney booking that totals $5,000 in commission, including any fees they deduct. A higher commission split doesn't always mean more money in your pocket.

What Does Being a Travel Advisor Actually Look Like?

Working as a travel advisor involves a lot more than planning fun vacations. You’ll spend time answering questions, following up with clients, processing payments and keeping track of reservation dates and deadlines. Some mornings may start early to book dining, and some nights end late doing online check-in for a cruise. Occasionally a client will need help while traveling outside your usual work hours too.

The flexibility of this role is a big benefit. Our advisors work from home, and many do this alongside another job or raising kids. You can build your schedule around your family, but you’ll also need to make time for your clients and stay on top of their bookings. It has to be a priority, not just a hobby.

My grandkids think I spend my days riding rides and eating snacks. I do enjoy those parts! They just don’t see all the emails, paperwork and early mornings that go along with the fun stuff.

Do Disney Travel Advisors Get Free Trips?

Being a travel advisor doesn’t mean you get to vacation for free. You may qualify for discounted rates or opportunities to visit resorts and experience the trips you sell, but each offer has its own eligibility requirements, costs, and expected ROI for the travel supplier (Disney, Universal, etc.).

Educational trips are work and often include resort tours, training and scheduled activities. They can be fun, but you’re there to learn so you can better advise your clients. Travel perks are a nice benefit, but they shouldn’t be your main reason for becoming an advisor.

Do I Have to Only Sell Disney?

No! Theme parks make up about 60% of our bookings, with cruises and international travel each accounting for roughly 20%. You can focus on the destinations you know best and expand your specialties as you gain experience. A client you help with Disney this year may come back to you for a cruise next year.

Favorite Grampy Travels also holds Official Universal U-Preferred Platinum status, with Universal training and lead opportunities available to eligible advisors.

You’ll have access to mentors who specialize in different destinations, along with support from Kirsten Andrade, our Director of Operations and Travel Advisor Development. New advisors learn alongside a cohort, and we stay connected through monthly Family Table Zoom calls and our annual Connections Conference in Orlando.

Who Should Not Do This?

You need income this quarter

It takes time to start earning. You might book a trip today that your client won’t take for several months. Your commission is only paid after the client travels and the agency receives payment. There’s no salary while you wait, so you’ll need to plan for that gap.

You want to plan but not sell

Loving vacation planning is a great start, but you also need to be comfortable selling. That means talking with potential clients, following up on quotes and asking if they’re ready to book. Even a great trip proposal needs follow up.

The discounts are the draw

If you’re looking for a way to make your own vacations cheaper, this probably isn’t the right fit. Travel discounts come with requirements, and your main focus needs to be selling travel and taking care of clients. The discounts do come, but only after they are earned.

You want a Disney job with a paycheck

If you want to be a Disney employee with a regular paycheck, this isn’t that kind of role. You’ll be an independent travel advisor who helps clients book Disney vacations, earning commission through a travel agency. If working directly for Disney is your goal, Disney’s careers site is the place to start.

What Should You Ask a Travel Agency Before You Join?

Before joining an agency, make sure you understand the costs, how you’ll get paid and what support you’ll receive. Here are a few questions worth asking:

Ask for clear answers and review the agreement before signing. Talk with advisors already at the agency, too. Their experience can help you decide if the team is a good fit for you.

At Favorite Grampy Travels, we’ve invested in helping our advisors find clients and grow their businesses. Our Lead Program earned a 2026 Travel Weekly Magellan Gold Award and connects eligible advisors with travelers looking for help planning their vacations. We’re also proud to have been named Best Company to Work For in the 2026 Best of Loudoun awards, along with Best Boss, Best Woman-Owned Business and Best Minority-Owned Business. We have been recognized among the county’s top travel agencies for seven consecutive years, 2020 through 2026.

If you’re looking for an agency that offers both opportunities to grow and a team to support you, we’d love for you to meet our advisors and get to know us.

Frequently Asked Questions About Becoming a Disney Vacation Planner

Yes! You don’t need previous experience as a travel advisor, but personal travel experience matters. Knowing Disney through your own trips gives you a foundation to build on as you learn to help clients.

At Favorite Grampy Travels, we welcome both new and experienced advisors. New advisors train alongside a cohort and have access to destination mentors for questions and guidance. We look for people who are organized, dependable, willing to learn and ready to put effort into selling travel.

Yes! Our advisors work from home, set their own hours, and many build their travel business alongside another job. You’ll need to set aside time for training, talking with clients and managing bookings.

You’ll also need a plan for early dining reservations or urgent issues while clients are traveling. If you have another job, think about how you’ll handle those needs and ask the agency what support is available when you’re unavailable. When a client’s flight cancels on a Friday night during your family time, you need to be reachable and you need to make your client the priority.

Plan on a few weeks rather than a few days. Acceptance and onboarding take a week or two, and Disney’s advisor training runs up to two weeks on top of that. At Favorite Grampy Travels, new advisors must complete training before they begin quoting and booking vacations. Your start date will depend on your onboarding and training schedule.

Once you’ve completed training, you can work closely with your mentor on your first few clients, getting help with quotes, bookings and questions along the way.

Not in the way the question usually means. Disney’s own work-from-home roles are posted on its careers site, and those are Disney jobs with a wage, a manager and a schedule.

Selling Disney vacations from home is different work. You are an independent travel advisor contracted to a travel agency, and you earn a share of the commission the supplier pays that agency instead of a wage. You also set your own hours. Both are real jobs, but very different.

No. Advisors at Favorite Grampy Travels work from home across the United States and sell vacations from wherever they are. They can do this because the booking tools and the training are online.

Living close does help in one fun way. Local travel advisors usually get to visit the parks more often! The agency keeps an office address in Celebration near Walt Disney World and holds its annual conference in Orlando. Travel advisors who live in Florida have one short state filing to settle, covered in the Florida guide linked above.

It can be! If you enjoy helping families, are willing to learn how to sell travel and can put time into building client relationships, it can be rewarding work. You get to use your Disney knowledge to help people make memories while growing a business of your own.

It takes patience, though. Training, following up with potential clients and managing bookings all take time, and income won’t be immediate. Think about the time you can realistically commit and how long you can wait to earn before deciding if it’s right for you.

Independent Contractor Application

One thing worth saying plainly. Favorite Grampy Travels recruits independent advisors and benefits when someone joins, which is exactly why this page publishes its own startup cost and its own split instead of describing the pay as “commission based” and leaving it there.

Of course, some readers land here wanting to hire an advisor rather than become one. If that is you, talk to the team about your own trip instead.
