Sadie McCracken is a Concierge Travel Advisor and Military Family Travel Specialist with Favorite Grampy Travels, specializing in Universal Orlando, Epic Universe, and Walt Disney World, based in Rochester, New Hampshire.
On a solo trip to Universal Orlando, I didn’t arrive at the parks until about 3 p.m. Instead of feeling rushed, I stayed through the evening and discovered something that changed how I plan for every client: the parks feel like a completely different place after dark.
The crowds ease up. The lighting transforms the atmosphere. Wait times drop. And some of the best photo opportunities you’ll find anywhere happen after the sun goes down. That trip is why I always encourage my clients to plan for nighttime in the parks, especially if they have Express Passes. Skip early park admission, sleep in, and arrive later in the day when the energy shifts and the parks come alive in a way most first-time visitors never experience.
I’ve visited Universal Orlando seven times in the past two years, and I’ve planned more than 100 vacations for families. The parks are constantly evolving, and being there this frequently means I’m not working from memory. I’m working from last month.
I’m a military spouse, and that shapes how I plan vacations in ways most travel advisors don’t think about. Military schedules are unpredictable. Leave gets approved late. Dates shift. Plans change at the last minute. I build every trip with that flexibility in mind, because I’ve lived it.
I specialize in helping military families navigate the Universal Orlando military discount programs, including the 2026 Military Freedom Pass, which starts at $220 for a 2-Park annual pass with discounted Epic Universe add-on tickets available separately. When my family first visited Universal, figuring out the ticket requirements, which ID to bring, where to purchase, and how to build the best package around the military pricing was frustrating. It took us three trips before I felt like I had it figured out. Now I walk military families through every step so they don’t have to learn it the hard way.
I also work with multigenerational groups and first-time Universal visitors. When multiple families are arriving at different times, staying for different lengths, or have different priorities for their trip, I bring all the moving parts together so everyone shares the experiences that matter most. One client told me the trip “felt like walking right into the books and movies” and that they “couldn’t have done it without you.” Another family said they “loved everything down to the hotel, tickets, and tips and tricks of the trade to maximize our vacation experience.” Hearing that kind of feedback after coordinating a complex trip is the best part of this work.
My path to travel advising started long before I ever booked a client’s vacation. I grew up with parents who directed a girls’ summer camp that welcomed staff from around the world. Spending those summers around people from different cultures sparked a curiosity about travel that never faded. After high school, I spent several years studying, living, and working at ski resorts in Colorado, surrounded by mountain views and travelers from everywhere. That experience deepened my love for hospitality and understanding what makes a destination feel special.
I also spent 15 years working in horticulture, including seven years growing annuals and perennials in commercial greenhouses. That career taught me patience, precise scheduling, and the discipline of planning around timing and conditions, skills that carry directly into building well-organized itineraries where every detail matters.
In 2024 I started looking for a career change, and my husband encouraged me to take my passion for travel and turn it into something real. I’d never planned to become a travel agent, but after years of helping military families navigate Universal’s ticket programs and building detailed park plans for friends, the fit was obvious. I joined Favorite Grampy Travels, a Universal U-Preferred Platinum agency and Authorized Disney Vacation Planner, and made it official.
Epic Universe is my current favorite park. Walking through each portal feels like stepping directly into a movie, especially Isle of Berk from How to Train Your Dragon. I’ve been several times and still haven’t seen everything. My son loves Cabana Bay Beach Resort, so we stay there every trip. I know the layout well enough to recommend the best buildings for pool access, walking distance, and early mornings.
Halloween Horror Nights at Universal is an annual tradition for my husband and me. HHN 35 runs select nights from August 28 through November 1 this year. If you’re planning around the event, I can help you figure out which nights work best and how to fit it into a longer Universal trip.
Based in Rochester, New Hampshire, just a short drive from the White Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, I work with families across the country. When we’re not traveling, our family loves hiking, skiing, and being home with our three dogs and two cats. My favorite scenic drive in the world is the Kancamagus Highway during peak fall foliage, and we try to make that trek north every year.
Q: Does Sadie McCracken specialize in military family travel?
Yes. As a military spouse, I understand the unique challenges military families face when planning vacations, from unpredictable schedules to navigating the Military Freedom Pass and military-specific ticket options at Universal Orlando. I help military families find the right discounts, build flexible plans, and make the most of every trip.
Q: What’s the best time to visit Universal Orlando?
It depends on your priorities. For shorter wait times and cooler weather, late January through mid-February and mid-September through October are ideal. But my biggest tip is to plan your park days around the evenings. Arriving later in the afternoon and staying through closing gives you a completely different experience with smaller crowds.
Q: Can you help coordinate a trip for multiple families traveling together?
Absolutely. I regularly plan trips where families arrive at different times, stay for different lengths, and have different budgets. I organize shared park days, coordinate dining, and make sure everyone gets the experiences they care about most. It’s like solving a puzzle, and it’s one of my favorite things to plan.
Q: Which Universal Orlando hotel is best for families on a budget?
Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort is my top recommendation. My family stays there every trip. The retro theming is fun, the pool area is great for kids, and it’s walking distance to Volcano Bay. For military families, Universal currently offers 40% off Cabana Bay stays, which makes it one of the best values on property.
Favorite Park: Epic Universe: Every portal is a new world. Isle of Berk stole my heart, and I still find new details every time I visit. If you’re planning a Universal trip right now, this park is the reason to go.
Favorite Restaurant: Trattoria del Porto at Loews Portofino Bay Hotel: The weekend Pasta Cucina buffet is something our whole family looks forward to. I always tell clients to save one evening for an off-park dinner here.
Favorite Attraction: VelociCoaster at Islands of Adventure: That barrel roll over the lagoon catches my breath every single time, and I love it.
Favorite Snack: A giant milkshake from Toothsome Chocolate Emporium after a long day at the parks. It’s earned.
Favorite Character: Toothless, Hiccup, and the Vikings of Isle of Berk. The character interactions in How to Train Your Dragon at Epic Universe are some of the best in any park.
Favorite Adult Vacation: Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando. It’s become an annual tradition with my husband, and there’s nothing else like it.
“We loved everything down to the hotel, tickets, and tips and tricks of the trade to maximize our vacation experience.”
