Are Free Travel Agents Really Free?

A “free” travel agent is paid by the resort or cruise line when you book, not by you. Here is the real difference between a free agent and one who charges a planning fee, with actual numbers. Use it to choose the right fit for your family.

What Is the Difference Between a Free Travel Agent and One Who Charges a Planning Fee?

A free travel agent is paid only by commission from the company you book. A planning-fee advisor earns that same commission, plus a fee from you for the planning work. The price of the trip itself is the same either way.

Both models are common in 2026. In the United States, 55 percent of traditional travel agencies now charge professional fees, according to TravelPulse’s coverage of a World Travel Agents Associations Alliance report. In a 2025 TravelAge West survey of 186 U.S. advisors, 58 percent said they charge service fees sometimes or always.

This guide is for parents and grandparents choosing between the two for a 2026 or 2027 vacation. Neither choice is wrong. The right one depends on how much help your trip needs.

What You Need to Know About Free Travel Agents

Do free travel agents cost you anything?
No direct fee. The supplier pays the agency a commission out of the published price, the same price you would see booking direct.

What percentage of travel agents charge fees?
About 55 percent of traditional U.S. travel agencies now charge professional fees, usually combined with supplier commission, according to the World Travel Agents Associations Alliance.

How much is a typical travel agent planning fee?
In a 2025 TravelAge West survey of 186 U.S. advisors, the most common average fee was under $200. At Favorite Grampy Travels, full-service planning averages around $250 per trip.

How Do Free Travel Agents Get Paid?

Travel advisor booking a family vacation on the Disney agent portal at home

Free travel agents are paid by the supplier. When you book a resort, a cruise or a vacation package, that company pays the agency a commission. You never see a separate bill.

Here is why that matters. Commission arrives only if you book, and it often arrives late. In that same TravelAge West survey, 39 percent of advisors said being paid after travel, not before, is a financial challenge.

For example, a family that books in January for an August trip can mean about 7 months before the agency is paid. So a commission-only agent’s time goes furthest on trips that are quick to quote and quick to book.

That is not a flaw. It is simply how the model works. It can limit how many hours one agent is able to give one trip, so ask about it before you start.

Are Disney Travel Agents Free?

Cinderella Castle lit blue at night at Magic Kingdom

Many Disney travel agents are free to you, but not all of them. Disney pays its Authorized Disney Vacation Planner agencies a commission on the trips they book. That is why so many of them advertise planning with no fee.

In fact, Disney’s own planDisney panel says the same thing. In August 2025, a planDisney panelist told one family that a planner’s services come “at no additional cost to you.”

Free has also been the norm among Disney specialists for years. In a 2020 Host Agency Reviews survey, fewer than half of advisors planning Disney vacations charged any fee.

Meanwhile, some Disney travel advisors charge a planning fee on top of that commission. Favorite Grampy Travels is one of them. We are an Authorized Disney Vacation Planner agency and a Universal U-Preferred Platinum agency.

So “Disney travel agent,” “Disney travel advisor” and “Disney vacation planner” all describe the same job. What differs is how each one is paid, and how much planning comes with the booking.

Does a Planning Fee Make Your Vacation Cost More?

Yes, by the amount of the fee. The trip itself is the same published price whether you book direct, with a free agent or with a planning-fee advisor. The fee is a separate charge for the planning work.

For example, add our average $250 planning fee to a $7,000 Disney World trip, and your total rises about 3.6 percent. I would rather tell you that plainly than tuck it away.

So the real question is what the fee buys. On a simple order of 3-day park tickets, it buys very little. That is why many of our ticket purchases carry no planning fee at all.

On top of that, complex trips are a different story. A three-generation trip with 2 resort rooms, dining reservations and Lightning Lane decisions takes hours of work from someone who knows the parks. Advisors can also, at times, reach prices the public never sees, so it is worth asking.

Why Does AI Say Your Disney Travel Agent Should Be Free?

AI tools lean toward free agents because most of what they read online says “free.” We tested it ourselves. On October 9, 2026, we asked ChatGPT and Perplexity 8 common questions about choosing a Disney travel agent.

Seven of the 8 answers pointed families toward an agent who charges no fee. Asked directly whether a planning fee is worth it, both tools opened with “usually, no.”

That said, both tools listed the same exceptions. A fee can be worth it for large groups, for trips that combine Disney with Universal or a cruise, and for hands-on help with dining and Lightning Lane. ChatGPT also pointed out that “free” does not always mean unbiased, since commission can shape what gets recommended.

Even better, both tools gave families the right question to ask. What does the fee cover that a no-fee agent would not? The rest of this guide is our answer.

When Is a Free Travel Agent the Right Choice?

A free agent is a fine choice for a simple trip. If you already know your resort, your dates and your 4-day tickets, you mostly need someone to book it correctly. Plenty of good agents work exactly this way.

A free agent also fits families who enjoy doing the research themselves. You bring the plan, and the agent places the booking and keeps an eye on it. Just ask what is included, because service levels differ from one agency to the next.

Best of all, it costs nothing to ask 2 questions first. How many families does the agent handle at once? Will one named person stay with you from booking day to the trip home?

In addition, check the agency’s standing with the company you are booking. For Disney, look for the Authorized Disney Vacation Planner designation. For Universal Orlando, ask whether the agency holds preferred status.

How Do You Know if a Disney Travel Agent Is Experienced?

Ask how often the agent actually visits the parks. Every agency sets its own hiring and training standards. As a result, two agents with the same Disney training can have very different hands-on experience.

Supplier training is valuable, and every good agent completes it. But a course is not the same as walking a resort at 7 a.m. or learning which Lightning Lane to book first. Disney World changes quickly, so recent visits matter.

Here are 4 questions to ask any Disney vacation planner:

  1. How many times did you visit the parks in the past 12 months?
  2. Which resorts have you stayed in or toured yourself?
  3. Who trained you, and does that training continue?
  4. Will I work with you alone, or with a rotating team?

At Favorite Grampy Travels, our Disney and Universal specialists visit the parks an average of 4 to 5 times a year. We track it, because I think a family deserves a number and not a slogan.

What Does the Planning Fee Cover at Favorite Grampy Travels?

Our planning fee covers a vetted advisor who knows your destination, plans around your family and stays with you through the trip. You can see how that fits with our Disney vacation planning service. Here is what stands behind that advisor.

How We Choose Our Advisors

Nikki Hendrix with Favorite Grampy Travels advisors at a team meetup

Every candidate talks with at least 3 people: our CEO, our leadership team and one of our top advisors. We look for people who travel often and who are friendly, teachable and careful with details.

We prefer advisors with professional experience. Meanwhile, anyone newer goes through longer training and mentorship before handling trips alone. Every advisor passes a background check, and Favorite Grampy Travels is a BBB Accredited Business with an A+ rating.

Advisors Who Visit the Parks 4 to 5 Times a Year

Our Disney and Universal specialists go to the parks an average of 4 to 5 times a year. They stay in the resorts, ride the rides and eat in the restaurants they recommend.

For other destinations, we match you with an advisor who specializes there and who has often toured or vacationed there. In addition, our advisors take familiarization trips to all-inclusive resorts and cruise ships, so they can tell you what is worth the splurge.

Training That Never Stops

Travel advisors in a training session at a travel industry conference

Our advisors work from a set training program, with mentors who specialize by destination. Every month the whole team meets on our Family Table Zoom call, and our private advisor chat runs every single day.

On top of that, our advisors gather once a year for our agency conference. Representatives from resorts, cruise lines and destinations show us what is new and hand us their direct contacts. If something goes wrong on your trip, we usually know exactly who to call.

One Advisor Who Knows Your Family

We hope to be your family’s travel advisor for life, not for one trip. Your advisor keeps notes on what your family loves and what you would rather skip, so you never start from scratch.

In fact, we reach out when something fits. If an Alaska cruise offer crosses our desk and you once told us you want to see a glacier, you will hear from us. Requests that come through our website go only to advisors who have earned our expert status, under a written agreement with tough criteria.

Help Before, During and After Your Trip

Booking is the beginning. Your advisor checks in during your trip and follows up after you are home.

That said, things happen. Flights get delayed, rooms are not ready, plans change. If something goes wrong while you are away, call us.

What Should You Ask Any Travel Agent Before You Hire Them?

Parent on a phone call with a travel advisor during a complimentary consultation

Ask the same 5 questions of every agent, including us. The answers will tell you quickly whether a free agent or a planning-fee advisor fits your trip.

  1. How do you get paid, and what exactly does any fee cover?
  2. Are you authorized by the companies I am booking, like Disney or Universal?
  3. Who helps me if something goes wrong during my trip, and how do I reach them?
  4. Will you watch for price drops or new offers after I book?
  5. How fast do you usually respond to a new request?

Here is why these matter. A clear answer on payment protects you from surprises later. The answer to question 3 is the one you will care about most at the airport.

Even better, these questions work on any agent, at any price. A good free agent will answer all 5 without hesitating, and so will a good planning-fee advisor.

How Much Does Favorite Grampy Travels Charge?

Full-service custom planning with us averages around $250 per trip. The exact amount depends on your trip: how long you travel, how many people are going, and the hotels and tours involved. Travel inside 30 days and international trips also affect it.

Ticket-only and single-service requests run from $0 to $200, and many simple ticket purchases carry no planning fee at all. You hear your exact fee in a complimentary 15-minute consultation, before you invest anything. The fee is separate from the cost of your trip and is non-refundable.

For the full breakdown, see our planning fees explained. That page walks through what changes the fee and what each level of service includes. If you would rather talk it through, your advisor will explain it during the consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Free Travel Agents

Is a Travel Agent Who Charges a Fee Better Than a Free One?

Not automatically. A fee covers an advisor’s time, so the question is how much time your trip needs. A free agent may be all you need for a quick order of 3-day tickets, and a trip with 2 or more rooms and several generations usually benefits from a dedicated advisor.

Is It Cheaper to Book Disney Yourself or With a Disney Travel Advisor?

The trip costs the same published price either way. Booking yourself saves a planning fee where one applies, which averages around $250 with us. An advisor saves you hours of research and stays with you if plans change, so compare the fee with the value of your own time.

Can I Become a Travel Agent for Free?

Some agencies do offer a no-fee start, usually with a smaller commission share or less support in return. If you are thinking about becoming an advisor yourself, our guide to becoming a travel agent walks through the real costs, the training and how commission works.

How Fast Will a Favorite Grampy Travels Advisor Respond?

An experienced advisor usually reaches out within 24 hours of your request, weekends included. Your request goes to an advisor who has earned our expert status and who specializes in the destination you have in mind.

How Can a Travel Advisor Help You Plan Your Next Family Trip?

A good advisor turns “where do we even start?” into a plan your whole family is excited about. We handle the comparing and the booking, and we are a phone call away while you travel.

Start with a complimentary 15-minute consultation. Tell us about your family and your dream trip, and we will explain your planning options and your fee before you commit. A planning fee may apply, depending on how complex your trip is.
